What is the plot of Sirens on Netflix?
Netflix recently released a new limited series on their platform called Sirens. It contains 5 episodes and tells the story of two sisters coming to terms with their childhood trauma on an idyllic New England island. The scenery is beautiful and the wardrobe is so fun. I really enjoyed this mini series from first episode until last, and I think you will too. So make sure to keep reading if you’re curious about what is the plot of Sirens on Netflix.
Who is in the Cast?
I have to say, I loved the star-studded cast of this show. There were some really great performances by every member of the main Cast. This includes:
- Meghann Fahy – Known for The Bold Type, The Perfect Couple, and Season 2 of The White Lotus. She plays older sister Devon who feels like she has to rescue her younger sister Simone from an unhealthy work/life situation.
- Milly Alcock – Known for House of the Dragon. She plays Simone, a type A live-in assistant who just might be brainwashed? She’s completely obsessed with her boss, Michaela Kell.
- Julianne Moore – I’m not even going to list everything she’s known for! Lol. But Julianne gives a fantastic performance as Michaela “Kiki” Kell, 1/2 of the powerful Kell couple and Simone’s boss. She’s incredibly particular and cares deeply about the bird sanctuary that she runs.
- Kevin Bacon – Again, I don’t think I need to list everything that he’s known for. Lol. But he also gives a great performance about Peter Kell, the incredibly rich and somewhat mysterious husband of Michaela.
- Glenn Howerton – Love him in It’s Always Sunndy in Philadelphia and AP Bio. He plays Ethan, another rich person and member of the society that Michaela runs.
- Felix Solis – Plays Jose, the property manager of the cliff house, the beautiful mansion that Peter and Michaela live in. I loved his character. I loved the way he was always texting funny things to the house staff in their group chat. I can’t imagine how fun it was to play Jose!
- Josh Segarra – This actor seems to be popping up all over the place lately, but I loved him as Lance in The Other Two. He plays Ray, who is Devon’s boss and friend. His character was really funny and added a lot of laughs to his scenes.
What is the Plot of Sirens on Netflix?
At the beginning of Sirens, Devon is really going through it. She’s just received her second DUI and her life is a bit of a mess. When she goes home, it is revealed that she lives with her father. He has early-onset dementia and needs a lot of care. Devon is clearly stressed and overwhelmed by everything that she has to do. So when she received a less than satisfactory acknowledgement from her younger sister Simone, she loses it.
She decides to take the ferry out to visit Simone on the New England island where she works. Her job as a live-in assistant to the enigmatic socialite Michael Kell doesn’t exactly give her any breaks or vacations. But when Devon arrives on the luxurious island of Port Haven and sees what her sisters new life is like, she has a lot of questions. Her intention was to have a serious discussion with Simone about their father, as well as admonish her for her lack of caring. But now it’s so much more.
Devon is a protective older sister and knows that something is up. But getting through to Simone isn’t easy. So after multiple failed attempts to break her sister free, she decides to take on formidable opponent Michaela Kell. She convinces Michaela to let her stay on the island and attend the weekend’s events so that she can spend time with her little sister.
The writers managed to pack so much into this five-episode series. While I did think that Michaela and Simone had a really creepy relationship, it was also so entertaining to watch. Definitely check this show out for it’s funny exploration of women.
What Did I Enjoy About This Show?
There was so much that I liked about this show. First of all, I was so impressed by the actresses who played Devon and Simone. This was a really emotional show because the two of them shared a lot of familial trauma. As each of them questions their sister’s choices, I felt compassion for both of them.
And the Kells’ lavish island estate was just beautiful to look at! I can’t imagine how fun it must be to live on a cliff like that. The views were just gorgeous.
And even though the characters on this show had many dark secrets, I enjoyed how it was also really funny. One of my favorite scenes was when they were all eating clam (or Quahog, I supposed) chowder and Peter invited all of his guests and some staff to eat with him. That scene was so funny with all of the different personalities. When Michaela found out they were eating bread she looked so miffed. Lol. Michaela’s relationship with food might not be the best.
Also, the whole meltdown after the Edible Arrangement? Too funny.
Do I Have Any Critiques?
This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but I felt like a lot of my main questions about this story were left unanswered. From the very first episode viewers are left with questions about the true relationship between Kiki (Michaela) and Simone. And personally, I had questions about Michaela’s history and the weird power she seemed to hold over people.
Maybe that’s the point. It would be boring if the creators of the show told us exactly what to think. Is Michaela a Cult Leader? And why do she and her friends speak in such enchanting voices? I don’t know. But I’m kind of glad that things were left open ended so that we cold come to our own conclusions.
Fun Fact
As I was reading up on this show, I did some internet research. The show is created by Molly Smith Metzler and the show is based on her play Elemeno Pea. It sounds like there are many similarities between the two stories, but with a few differences here and there.
All I know is that after reading Elin Hilderbrand’s books, I decided I wanted to visit Nantucket someday. And now I’m adding Martha’s Vineyard to the list. Haha.
In Conclusion
I hope you enjoyed my blog post about what is the plot of Sirens on Netflix.
It’s a really enjoyable show and I feel like it’s one that I’ll watch again. I loved the preppy New England vibes. The story takes place over a long Labor Day weekend so it’s definitely a fun show to indulge in during the Summer season. Maybe I’ll save it and watch it again at the end of August.
This show’s five-episode run was well done and very enjoyable! I didn’t want this review to have any spoilers in it so I’ll just say this… the end of the series will definitely surprise you.
