Review: Dollface TV Show (starring Kat Dennings) on Hulu

While much of my blog focuses on books, I’m a sucker for television as well. My favorite kinds of shows are ones depicting female friendships in an honest and realistic light. Your twenties is such a crazy time as you transition into adulthood, and I love to read books and watch TV & movies that have great femal protagonists. So in today’s blog post, we’re going to be talking about a show I’ve loved over the past few years. We’re going to be talking about Dollface TV show, which was originally released on Hulu in 2019.

What is Dollface TV Show About?

After breaking up with her longtime boyfriend, a woman tries to reconnect with the friends she lost during the relationship. (from imdb.com)

The main story focuses on a young woman named Jules Wiley (played by Kat Dennings). The show takes place in Los Angeles.  For a couple of years now, Jules has been completely consumed by her relationship with her boyfriend. But after a breakup, she realizes that she let her female friendships dwindle away. She decides that it’s time to re-enter girl world and try to revive her relationships with her girlfriends. Over the course of the show they cover different topics like breakups, modern dating, and the intricacies of female friendship.

Who are the Characters in Dollface TV Show?

In case you were wondering who our main characters are, there’s:

Jules – She is the main character played by Kat Dennings. She’s a web designer for a super chic wellness company called Woom.

Madison – Madison is played by Brenda Song. She and Jules are best friends from college. She’s very stylish and a public relations expert. One of the plot points of season 1 is that she has an older boyfriend. Jules tries to keep an open mind and be a good friend to her.

Stella – Stella is played by Shay Mitchell and she’s another friend from college. She and Madison can have opposite opinions sometimes, which means things difficult for Jules.

Izzie – Izzie is played by Esther Povitsky. She starts out as just a coworker to Jules, but she quickly becomes one of the core group.

What Makes Dollface Unique?

I think this is a really fun and comforting show for twenty something women because it’s realistic, but there’s also this fantasy element to the show. There are these fantasy sequences where a “cat lady” helps Jules make decisions. She’s a part of her imagination, and yet she helps Jules think things through and help her form better relationships with her gal pals.

Why do I Love Dollface?

This show just covers so many relatable things. It covers things like how to cope when you’re friends are fighting. What to do when you break up with your ex, but you’re still expected to go to his sister’s bachelorette party. What to do when you’re hosting your first formal dinner party. How to thrive as a single woman in your twenties.

The world of women is difficult, so it’s important to have friends to get you through. I really liked the first season because it felt like a very realistic depiction of getting over a breakup and moving on. It’s not all ups. Sometimes things get worse before they get better. And of course, I loved all the girls by season 2 so it was great to see them all trying to move forward with their adult lives.

Will there be a Season 3 of Dollface?

No. Sadly it was cancelled in 2022. And I can’t even find the episodes on Hulu or Disney+ anymore so that sucks! You can watch season 1 on Amazon but you do have to pay unfortunately.

NOT COOL, Disney. Not cool.

In Conclusion

I hope you enjoyed today’s review of the Dollface TV show. I first watched it in 2020 and I was so excited when a new season released in 2022. Although the show is over now, I enjoy watching it again in my free time. It’s become one of my favorite tv shows to watch on a girls night, or when I’m just chilling at home with my dog.
