What is Nobody Wants This About?
There are certain television shows and movies that just bring me a lot of joy, and Nobody Wants This is a new additional to the list. Season 1 released on Netflix back in 2024 to glowing reviews. I think this is because this show feels like a romantic comedy, but it also feels very relatable and true to life. Viewers see a lot of themselves in Joanne and Noah, as well as their relationship ups and downs.
In today’s blog post I’m going to be answering the question: What is Nobody Wants This About?
We’ll be discussing the television show’s plot, the main characters, the romance, as well as many of the hot button issues and romantic difficulties that the characters face in this delightful TV show.
What is Nobody Wants This About?
Nobody Wants This is a new-ish romantic drama television show that first premiered on Netflix in 2024. I remember hearing about the show beforehand because Kristen Bell and Adam Brody were seen filming together. And I remember wondering what the show was going to be about. I had no idea that the two were cast as the romantic leads!
Bell plays Joanne, an agnostic sex podcaster who meets Noah, a young Rabbi, at a friend’s dinner party. The two talk for a bit at the party and there’s definitely an attraction between them. But what could come of it? Noah is newly single and looking for a woman who shares his faith. Joanne is funny and open and used to sharing her business with everyone (through the podcast).
The two of them just have a connection though, and it’s hard to deny. As they tiptoe around each other and eventually start to date, there are a lot of differences that they need to address. And of course there’s the elephant in the room… If their relationship has a future, would Joanna be willing to convert in order to be with Noah?
Is Nobody Wants This a True Story?
No, Nobody Wants This is not a true story. But it’s an interesting premise for a show, isn’t it? The cool thing is that creator Erin Foster based some of it off her real-life love story. You can find out more here, but when she met her husband and fell in love, she found out that it was important to him to marry someone who was also part of the Jewish faith. And that started her conversion journey.
I think that when people share their real life stories like that, that’s how we get the best depictions in books and tv. That’s what makes a story feel so realistic and authentic.
Is Nobody Wants This on Netflix Worth Watching?
Yes! It is absolutely worth watching. While I love a romantic comedy movie, I love a romantic comedy television show even more. The different season and episodes give additional time for us to get to know the main couple, the supporting cast, and the different nuances in their relationship. I love the setting (Los Angeles) and the main characters played by Kristen Bell and Adam Brody. It’s a show you won’t want to miss of you love romcoms.
How Many Episodes are in Nobody Wants This on Netflix?
There are 10 episodes in Season 1 and 10 episodes in Season 2. Creator Erin Foster has announced that there will be a season 3, so that’s something to look forward to!
Who Are the Characters in Nobody Wants This?
As of right now when I write this blog post, there are two seasons of the show. And the third season has been announced. There are new characters brought to the show in Season 2 (like Kate Berlant and Seth Rogen) but I’m just going to focus on the main cast that we meet in Season 1.
Joanne is played by Kristen Bell while Noah is played by Adam Brody.
Noah’s Family:
- Sasha – Noah’s brother and best friend.
- Esther – Sasha’s wife, who is skeptical of Joanna and her sister Morgan at first.
- Mom – She’s very proud of Rabbi Noah and wants him to date a Jewish woman.
- Dad – He’s more laid back compared to Noah’s Mom but still shares some of her beliefs.
Joanne’s Family
- Morgan – Joanne’s sister and cohost on the podcast. She’s juggling her own relationship troubles and is a little jealous when Joanna starts spending less time with her when she gets with Noah.
- Mom – Very supportive of Joanne, and also a little goofy. Lol. If you watch the show you’ll know what I mean!
- Dad – Also very supportive of his daughters and also a little goofy. But very funny and I loved what he added to the show.
- Ashley – The podcast producer. She’s also a friend to both Joanne and Morgan. It’s at her dinner party that Joanna first meets Noah.
Who Makes Up the Cast of Nobody Wants This?
I don’t mean to gush, but I love everyone in this cast! They are all so funny and talented. Okay. Enough gushing. If you’re curious about who is in the cast, here is a small list of who plays each of the main characters. I’m not going to list everybody just because it’s a lot. But you can check out the show’s imdb or wikipedia pages for more information on the supporting cast.
- Noah: Adam Brody
- Joanna: Kristen Bell
- Sasha: Timothy Simons
- Esther: Jackie Tohn
- Morgan: Justine Lupe
- Ashley: Sherry Cola
Dating Can Be So Difficult
I love how TV shows are doing such a good job of honestly portraying dating now. Remember how in How I Met Your Mother Ted dated like, 5000 women over the course of the show? Crazy. Absurd. But that show was created in the early 00’s so I guess I kind of get it.
But dating is not easy. And the average person in a big city (New York for Ted Mosby, Los Angeles for Joanne) does not meet that many people to go on dates with. They just don’t. So I like how television shows are now showing the difficulties in contemporary dating and relationships.
In Nobody Wants This, Joanna isn’t looking for anybody. She’s focused on her job and herself. But she just happens to meet the right person at a dinner party and has to decide if it’s worth it to take a chance and go after what she wants.
What Do I Like about Nobody Wants This?
- I love Joanne and Noah’s families. Some of the funniest scenes happen when they are involved. The supporting cast has to be A+ in any good romantic comedy series and I think these meddling families are perfect.
- The realness of it all. There’s this scene that hits me really hard where Joanna finds a box of Noah’s ex-girlfriends things at his house. And she has to decide whether to look at it or to just let it go. And it’s so perfectly punctuated by an Olivia Rodrigo song. I felt that.
- The realistic portrayal of dating. In the very first episode, Joanna goes on a weird internet date and has to escape.
- Joanne’s sister Morgan is so funny! She adds a lot of humor to the series. Joanne describes her as her best friend and her worst enemy and it’s so true. But Kristen and Justine have great chemistry together which makes for good moments in the series.
What Could Be Worked on in Nobody Wants This?
In the second season of Nobody Wants This, the honeymoon phase is over. Things are getting real. And Adam Brody’s character kind of drove me crazy. It felt like he was cosplaying a good boyfriend.
I thought Season 1 did a good job of pointing out the difficulties in interfaith relationships. And the ending brought up some very good questions. Is it right to ask someone to change, if it’s for love? Can a couple work out when they more or less come from different worlds?
I enjoyed the different story lines in Season 1 but Season 2 bummed me out a little bit. I don’t want to spoil anything in case you haven’t watched yet, but the show covers a lot of different relationship real-life experiences. And some of them are good, and others are sad.
I hope that in season 3 they come to a conclusion about the question of conversion. Joanne has to decide what is best for her, and what decision she wants to make. No one can make that choice for her. The next step is completely up to her.
In Conclusion
If you can’t tell, I just love this show so much! It’s a genuinely funny show that looks at cultural differences, religious differences, and everything that it takes to make a relationship work.
I grew up Lutheran and don’t really know many Jewish people, so I felt like I learned a bit about the Jewish religion and culture. And I think that’s important right now in today’s world. Television shows that teach, and give you a taste of something new, should be celebrated. I know it’s just a comedy show but an unlikely romance, but it has a lot of emotional depth.
Seasons 1 and 2 were very enjoyable and I think the third season has so much potential. And in the meantime, you can turn on Netflix and watch what’s available while we wait for Season 3 news. 🙂
