Girl's Girl by Sonia Feldman

Hello readers! I recently checked out the audiobook of Girl’s Girl by Sonia Feldman from the library. And I was so entranced by this story from the first page. It made me feel so nostalgic for the summers of my teen years. See, it’s a story about a trio of friends and the different things they go through during the Summer when they are fifteen. And if you’ve ever been a teenager (which we all have, right?) you know that it’s a very emotional time.

I felt like the author did such a good job of capturing those feelings. Especially because each othe characters (Mina, Margaret, and Eleanor) have such similar, yet different, living situations. My Initial Thoughts

I started listening to the audiobook of Girl’s Girl without really knowing what it was about. But an instagram account I follow read it and liked it so I was like, why not?

The friendship between the 3 girls made me feel so nostalgic for the books of my youth. I immediately thought about Just As Long As We’re Together by Judy Blume, which I loved as a young adult. But then when I realized what the crux of the plot was, I thought about The Bermudez Triangle by Maureen Johnson. This book is also about a friend group that struggles when two of the friends start dating.

All in all, I really loved this book. I thought it was such a sweet story about yearning and trying to figure out how you really feel as a young adult.

The Depiction of Teenhood Felt Very Realistic

There’s a scene in this book where the girls get in trouble. And it’s so funny and realistic how the author wrote it. Mina, who has a strict mom, is immediately grounded. And her Mom insists on telling the other Moms, who have slightly different reactions.

I definitely had those moments when I was a kid, where it seems like everyone else gets to do things that you don’t get to do. In the moment, it truly seems unfair. And I loved how that was written into this story, and how it affected the relationship between the 3 girls.

This is a LGBTQIA+ Story

If you haven’t already deduced from the description, this book is about girls kissing. And I thought it was so interesting how there was no big coming out moment. And I liked that, because that means that it’s not a big deal. It shouldn’t be a big deal. Because love is love and that’s a natural part of life.

Would I Recommend This Book?

Yes! Absolutely. The depiction of girlhood and yearning was really sweet. It made me feel nostalgic for summer as a teenager, and the kind of books I used to read. I loved the parts about The Sims and getting ready to go out. It just felt so true to life.
