Reading, Relaxing, and Soaking Up Sun

I’m finally back from my beach vacation and let me tell you… it was so much fun! I haven’t taken a week off work in probably 2 years so this vacation was much needed. I was so happy to have time to relax, read, and just enjoy myself. Here’s a little wrap up of everything I did (and read) this past week.

Friday September 1, 2023

We packed the car after work and hit the road! First stop was to visit my parents and spend some time at their house at the beach in Delaware. We left late, but that actually worked out well because we hardly hit any traffic. I was tired by the time we pulled in so we unloaded the car, visited with my Mom for a bit, and then headed to bed.

My Mom, Dad, David, and I all had breakfast together. Then we all separated and did our separate things. David wanted to finish putting together my bike together so he worked on that. I was so thrilled when I finally got to ride it! We took our bikes on a little joy ride around the neighborhood in order to test it out. It’s definitely a lot lighter and easier to ride than my old bike, which I’ve been borrowing from David’s Mom.

We went to an early dinner at Agave to celebrate my Mom’s birthday. It was so good! We all shared a platter of different guacamoles and chips as an appetizer. Then we each had a quesadilla for dinner. Mine was a simple chicken + cheese but it was very delicious. We all were so full afterward.

Later on we went to Shell We Golf. David and I are very serious about mini golf and I’ve never beaten him. It was a close game but he still came out ahead. Maybe next time!

After that we drove over to our friends Dave & Gretchen’s house because they had a full house of people (including David’s parents) visiting for Labor Day. We got over there just around the time they were eating dinner so we hung out and had dessert with them afterward. I tried Key Lime Pie for the first time, which Dave said he picked up in honor of Jimmy Buffet (Rest in Peace).

Beach day! We stopped at Surf Bagel for Breakfast Sandwiches before driving in to Cape Henlopen. We like to go there so David can boogie board and I can sit on the beach and read. My first read of the week was First Day of School Murder by Leslie Meier.

We had dinner with my parents and then we took the bus into Rehoboth to walk around town. I got to go to Browseabout Books which is my favorite bookstore around! I was good though. Haha. All I did was look and make notes about books I want to buy later on.

We also stopped by The Purple Parrot and hung out in their biergarten, drinking orange and grapefruit crushes. That was one of their drink specials for Sundays and they were very tasty.

Today was a pool day. My Dad left for his business trip and then in the afternoon Mom, Dave and I went to the pool. We hung out with Chris my mom’s neighbor for a bit and had lunch. Then in the evening Dave and I drove down to Ocean City Maryland so that we could have dinner and visit the boardwalk.

Dinner was good! We had a great view at De Lazy Lizard. Then we headed for the boardwalk and visited some shops. Before we left we had Kohr Brothers ice cream (my absolute fave!) and then played mini golf at Embers.

Somehow I wound up beating Dave at mini golf! My first time winning in our four year relationship. Haha. I tried not to rub it in or anything, but I was pretty damn proud of myself.

Tuesday September 5, 2023

We headed to the beach in the morning. It was a lot less crowded because of it being the day after labor day. We stayed for a few hours and then headed home to have a snack and take our bikes out. We road the breakwater trail and stopped at Revelation Brewing before heading into town.

We had dinner at Cilantro which was really good. I had enchiladas and they had queso fresco on top which was really good. On our way home we stopped at the liquor store and Walmart to pick up some final things we needed for our camping adventure in Cape May.

Wednesday September 6, 2023

In the morning we said goodbye to my Mom and Hazel and then headed to Surf Bagel for more breakfast sandwiches. Then we drove to the ferry and got in line for loading. It was actually really smart to take breakfast on the go because we had to sit there for quite a few minutes until they would let us on.

Once the cars were loaded on we headed for the top deck so that we could enjoy the ride! It was sunny and I definitely tanned a little bit. There was a bar on the ferry so Dave got a bloody mary and I got an orange crush to sip on the ride.

In Cape May we met up with our friends Kelly, Bob, Curtis, Rob, and Traci at Harbor View for a few afternoon drinks. Then we all headed back to the campground and Dave and I checked in.

Orange Crush on the Cape May Ferry

Our site was a decent size, even with our new giant tent. We got things all set up and then headed over to Bob and Kelly’s camper where the gang was meeting up. Bob cooked chili for dinner and it was delicious. We all sat around until late in the evening, listen to 90’s music and drinking. All in all a great first day of camping!

Thursday September 7, 2023

The plan for Thursday was to eat breakfast together and then head on a bike ride! We rode into town to visit Beach Plum Farm which is an amazing farm with chickens and lots of flowers. You can shop their little market store and then head out back for some food.

I got a breakfast sandwich on a brioche bun and it was amazing!

Later on the gang regrouped and we rode our bikes to Cape May Brewing. It was a hard ride for me. The rest of the group is pretty serious about cycling. I’m more of an amateur. But it was fun to ride with friends and of course it’s awesome to have a beer waiting for you at the end.

We stopped at one more brewery before heading back to the campground to change and head out for dinner and drinks. We went to Mooncussers and the Orange Crush was awesome. There was a food truck selling bbq and I really enjoyed my dinner as well.

Then we headed back to the campground to hang out and eventually head to bed.

Friday September 8, 2023

For breakfast Dave and I went to the Mad Batter with Rob and Traci, and it was really good. Dave and I decided that we wanted to head to the beach so we went after that, but had to leave early due to weather. I had a pretty bad headache during this time and wound up getting pretty sick in the afternoon.

But I rallied for our last night. We went to Harry’s for dinner. The entertainment for the night was a piano duo and they started taking requests. It was really fun so we moved to the bar and stayed a while to listen to the music.

Time to go home! As much as I loved our relaxing vacation, I also was really happy to pack up and head home. The heat was just too much and staying in a tent (at least to me) is only fun for a few days at a time. We grabbed a quick breakfast at Bagel Time Cafe (which was awesome, highly recommend) and then wandered the streets for a while. I wanted to take some photos of all of the cool buildings that was saw.

Then it was time to hit the road!

What did I read on Vacation?

  1. Back to School Murder by Leslie Meier (Finished)
  2. Love Lettering by Kate Claybourn (In Progress)
  3. Town in a Pumpkin Bash by B.B. Haywood (In Progress)

That’s all for today! I’m working on some posts that will be posted soon, including my review of Back to School Murder. If you haven’t got a chance to read my August Reading Wrap Up yet, click here.
