I Want Your Hex Book Review: A Cozy Mystery by Tara Lush

I recently read Eat Pray Hex by Tara Lush, which is the first book in the Crescent Moon Mystery series. And to say I adored it is an understatement! The author created such a beautiful little town filled with interesting characters and a fun (and ghostly) mystery. All of the books are available in Kindle Unlimited so I knew I wanted to continue on with the second book as quickly as possible. That’s why in today’s blog post I’ll be sharing my I Want Your Hex book review.

This series is about Amelia, a woman juggling midlife changes along with a new town, and some new magical abilities. If you enjoy cozy mysteries with humor and a touch of paranormal, then this book is for you.

What is I Want Your Hex About?

A bachelorette party turns deadly in this quirky paranormal cozy mystery!

Innkeeper Amelia Matthews’ weekend goes from festive to fatal when a guest is murdered during a haunted swamp walk. With her psychic powers growing stronger and a killer on the loose, Amelia must channel her abilities and tap into the ghostly realm to catch the culprit.

Joined by a spectral new friend, witches with weird talents, and a charming, silver fox historian, Amelia races to solve the case before the killer strikes again. But with suspects around every corner and her own life on the line, will her newfound gifts be enough?

I WANT YOUR HEX is a lightly spooky, laugh-out-loud adventure filled with supernatural thrills, midlife mayhem, and a touch of romance. Perfect for fans of plucky heroines and haunted whodunits. If you loved Scooby Doo and Nancy Drew as a kid, this is the book for you! Grab your flashlight and join Amelia as she faces a baffling mystery in the Florida swamp! (from Amazon.com)

I Love the Community of Cypress Grove

Something that I loved so much about the first book in this series is the quirky cast of characters. The Crescent Moon Mysteries are available in Kindle Unlimited so after I finished Eat, Pray, Hex I couldn’t wait to dive into the second book in the series. Amelia Matthews is a relatable protagonist and all of her new friends including Liz, Oliver, Sage, Jimbo, Marisol and more are a joy to read about.

Plus there’s her lovable cat Freddie. He’s a funny feline who needs much human attention, but that’s what makes him such a good sidekick for Amelia.

The Mystery

In the first book, a bachelorette party books the Crescent Moon Inn for an entire weekend. And in the second book, we get to see the bachelorette party take place. Amelia is excited to host her first guests and make their spooky dreams come true. When another Inn owner in the community invites her and her guests to attend a spooky bachelorette party walk, Amelia is excited to attend.

But the night doesn’t exactly go as planned. When one of Amelia’s guests is murdered during the spooky walk and police chief doesn’t seem to be solving the murder  in a timely manner, it’s up to Amelia to start searching and find out the truth. With Oliver’s help, of course.

Some Fun elements to this Story:

  • The main character Amelia is such a pleasure to read about. She’s thoughtful, kind, and doesn’t take nonsense from anyone. In Book 1, she was at a bit of a crossroads. She didn’t know if she wanted to stay and run the Crescent Moon Inn or to try to sell it. But the decision has been made, and she’s ready to start the second part of her life on her own terms.
  • More Ghosts! I loved the interactions that Amelia and Tiffany had together at the swamp. The scenes with DJ Ghostwave made me smile too. This was a funny element of the story.
  • A Fall Festival! My town has a Fall Festival every year and it’s so much fun to attend. And Amelia has a lot of fun at hers, until the festival turns awkward when a reporter tries to interview her about the murder from the night before.

Shout Out to my Favorite Side Character

I’ve been obsessed with Sage, who is part cowgirl and part witch, since book 1. She’s Oliver’s younger sister who recently moved back to town after spending some time in Sedona. She’s a free spirit and she always makes me laugh. I think that her and Jimbo make a great pair.

Did I Solve the Mystery?

No, I did not. But that’s okay because I had a fun time trying to track down clues along with Amelia and the gang. I think author Tara Lush did a great job of writing a twisty mystery that was fun and kept me guessing. I’ve been to a few bachelorette weekends in the past couple of years and I have no idea what I would have done if somebody had died during one of our activities!

That would not be good in real life, but in a book it makes for a very interesting premise.

In Conclusion

I hope you enjoyed today’s I Want Your Hex book review. This second book in the Crescent Moon Mysteries Series was a joy to read. I love these characters and although the book has paranormal elements, it’s also feels very realistic? Lol. I appreciate Amelia’s methodical mystery solving skills. I imagine her magical abilities are going to grow strong and stronger as the series continues so I can’t wait to find out what happens next.
