Hot Frosty Movie Review: A Lacey Chabert Christmas Film

In today’s blog post I’m going to share my Hot Frosty movie review.

When I first saw the advertisements for Hot Frosty, Netflix’s new Christmas film, I balked. I love Lacey Chabert in Hallmark Christmas movies so I had high hopes. But the plot just seemed so silly. A handsome snowman coming to life? I wasn’t sure how that would work.

But I was pleasantly surprise by Hot Frosty’s heartwarming story. I know that this is a Christmas movie I will want to watch year after year and I’m excited to share my Hot Frosty movie review on the blog today.

First, let’s get into what this movie is all about!

What is Hot Frosty on Netflix About?

Hot Frosty is a Christmas film that premiered on Netflix in November 2024. Some of the main cast includes Lacey Chabert, Dustin Milligan, Craig Robinson, Joe Lo Truglio, Lauren Holly, Katy Mixon, and Sherry Miller. It was directed by director Jerry Ciccoritti.

When the film first opens, we are introduced to Kathy Barrett. She lives in the town of Hope Springs, New York and runs Kathy’s Kafe. As a local restaurant owner she knows everyone in her small town and is friendly to all. She decides to take some lunch over to her friends (an elderly couple) at their secondhand store across the street. Her friend gives her a red scarf and explains that it reminds her of the night she met the love of her life. She hopes that it will bring Kathy the same luck that it brought her.

Kathy doesn’t seem to believe her, but she graciously accepts the scarf. While walking through town that evening, she admires the snow sculptures that have been built for the snow sculpture competition. There’s one sculpture that looks like a very fit guy, so she wraps the scarf around his neck and takes a picture.

In the morning, she’s surprised to find a man wandering around town with the scarf on, talking to the other snow sculptures.

Is he a drifter? Is he okay? Kathy isn’t so sure. But she’s very kindhearted, so she brings him into the restaurant and offers him some food. He claims to be the snowman that she wrapped the scarf around the night before, but that can’t be true. Or can it?

My Initial Thoughts

I love a good Christmas movie and the cast of this one seemed promising. Lacey Chabert is known as a Hallmark Christmas movie queen, and Dustin Milligan is known from Schitts Creek. A movie about a sexy snowman coming to life seems a little silly, but right off the bat I was impressed. Maybe I’m just easy to please but I felt like Netflix took an absurd idea and made it into a sweet holiday romcom.

The main street of Hope Springs was really cute and even though Kathy’s house was in disrepair (because her late husband used to do all the fixing) it was still decorated adorably. I loved the details of this movie. Kathy’s Kafe (which is basically a small-town diner) was also very cute on the inside and it was the perfect place for the town’s Christmas Eve party at the end of the movie.

Whether it was Intentional or Not, Hot Frosty is a Very funny movie

The most important part of a romantic comedy is that it’s funny, and I felt that this movie definitely succeeded. First of all, there’s the scene after Kathy gives Jack the magic scarf and he comes to life. Since he’s never been a real man before, the only clothes he has on when he becomes real is his red scarf! That really gave me a good laugh as he streaked through the town and shocked an elderly couple who were walking their dog.

Then, there’s the cops. The town sheriff is played by Craig Robinson, with his assistant being played by Joe Lo Truglio. Both of these comedic actors (who have been in many tv shows) are very funny and I thought they made a great duo in this film.

And I have to mention the elderly women who took a really liking to the new hunky man in their town. Like the scene where Jack had to help a woman who got stuck in a snow bank while ogling him. And then when he helped them with the lights. It was honestly too funny. The humor in this film is what made it a pretty charming Christmas movie.

The Netflix Holiday Movie Universe

I have to say, I’ve really been enjoying the holiday movies that Netflix has been putting out. And it’s fun how they reference each other. This film had a cute mention of Aldovia (which is where The Christmas Prince took place) as well as a cute Mean Girls reference.

This Netflix Movie has Christmas Magic

This Christmas romcom had a lot of great elements that are crucial to good romantic comedies. Like when they went to the clothing store and had a dressing-room montage. Or when Jack worked so hard to try to make everyone’s lives better. But to me, the best part was the Christmas magic.

Jack coming to life was really a Christmas miracle because he worked hard to improve the lives of the entire town, but he worked especially hard to help Kathy. She explained to him during the film that she was still healing after the death of her husband, and he took that very seriously to help lift her spirits during the Christmas season.

In Conclusion

I know that people looked at the ads for this movie and had a lot of ideas. They probably assume it’s just a silly movie looking for excuses to show off star Milligan’s muscular physique in a pair of denim overalls. But that’s so far from the truth. This is a sweet holiday movie that reminds me how important it is to be kind and to care about others.

And you know what? It knows how to have a good time. There were so many funny scenes in this movie and it warmed my heart when Jack got so excited about helping out at the middle school dance.  And I loved any scene with the Sheriff. When Craig Robinson was sitting behind the piano, it reminded me of so many Darryl moments from The Office. Plus seeing him and Joe Lo Truglio together of course made me think about Brooklyn 99.

Is Hot Frosty a suggestive title? Yeah. Maybe. But you shouldn’t just a book by it’s cover, and you also shouldn’t judge Christmas films by their titles. Just sit down in front of your TV and enjoy the most wonderful time of year.
