He’s the Ghost of Christmas Past. She’s not exactly Scrooge.
Ghost of Christmas Past Nolan Callahan intends to spend this holiday haunting like every other—get in, get out, return to his otherwise aimless existence as a ghost awaiting the afterlife. But when he’s faced with Harriet York, the sweetest assignment he’s ever had, he suddenly finds himself wishing for a future.
Harriet York has no idea why she’s being haunted. She’s a good person—or, at least, she tries to be. A people pleaser to her core, she always does what’s expected of her. But as she and Nolan begin to examine her past, they discover there are threads that bind them together— and realize there might be more to moving on than expected.
With the deadline of Christmas Eve fast approaching, will they find the key to their futures in each other’s pasts? Or will they stay firmly in the present, indulging in their unexpected, spirited connection?

Why Did I Want to Read Good Spirits by B.K. Borison?
- I was talking to my Sister in Law Marissa over Thanksgiving and she said that she was looking forward to it! She loves contemporary romances and has great taste in books, so I knew it must be good.
- It was a Book of the Month choice for December. I’ve only beed misled by BORM a couple of times. So I had a good feeling about this one.
- The premise sounded so cute! I love a good Christmas Carol retelling.
What Were My Initial Reactions?
I’ve been in the mood for a sweet holiday romance (the last one I read wound up being very spice! lol) so I was very excited for this book. It’s my first b.k. borison book and I found it to be very enjoyable. Harriet and Nolan were such sweet characters, and I found Harriet to be very relatable. I also feel like I don’t fit in with my family so that plot line really tugged at my heartstrings. I just wanted to grab Harriet (candy canes and all) and give her a hug.
I Really Appreciate a Book with Christmas Magic
When it comes to Christmas media (books and movies), there are different kinds of stories. Some are completely contemporary. Others have a magical element to them. And that’s something I really enjoyed about Good Spirits. Nolan takes Harriet on so many journeys through both of their pasts, to help her (and him) figure out what is going on.
But although Nolan is the ghost of Christmas past, he manages to show Harriet some magic in other ways as well. Their relationship is very special from the very beginning, and their love story felt very natural.
This magical book warmed my heart in so many different ways. And I think some of that is because of the vulnerable characters and emotional depth. But it also has to do with the story taking place during Christmastime, which is generally a sentimental time of year.
This Christmas romance just worked for me in more ways than one.
What did I Love About Good Spirits?
- The flirtatious banter between Harriet and Nolan. They may be fictional characters but I found them completely adorable!
- The special relationship that we got to see between Harriet and her Aunt Matilda
- The glimpses we got to see of the antique store. Harriet is an antique shop owner after inheriting the business after her aunt passed away. Isn’t that such a cool career?
- I liked getting to see both Harriet and Nolan’s past memories. It was an interesting twist on the ghost of Christmas past plotline.
- So yeah! The magical elements of this book were very cool to see.
Would I Recommend Good Spirits?
Yes. I really enjoyed this book and I have a feeling it will be one that I want to reread every Christmas. It’s an emotional tale that gave me all the cozy hallmark movie feelings that I get watching Countdown to Christmas. If you’re looking for something new to read this cozy season, I definitely recommend picking it up. It just might be the bit of holiday magic you need this Christmas!
What Else has B.K. Borison Written?
She is known for Lovelight Farms, In The Weeds, First-Time Caller, as well as And Now, Back to You. As I mentioned earlier, this is my first time reading a book by her. But I can’t wait to check out the rest of them in the upcoming year.
There’s just so much to read and so little time! Lol
In Conclusion
I hope you enjoyed today’s Good Spirits book review. This magical holiday romance made me so happy to read, and I hope that you enjoy it too. It’s the perfect book to curl up with on the couch with your warmest blanket. Happy reading this holiday season!
