Finlay Donovan Jumps The Gun by Elle Cosimano
I first started reading the Finlay Donovan series by Elle Cosimano earlier this year. And it has become such a high point in my reading life. In today’s blog post I’m going to be sharing my full Finlay Donovan Jumps the Gun book review.
Like the first two books in the series, this book made laugh out loud quite a few times. I love how Finlay and Vero handle their bouts of crime with the daily trials of parenthood. If you enjoyed the first two books in this series you’ll definitely want to add this third book to your TBR list.

What is Finlay Donovan Jumps the Gun About?
Finlay Donovan has been in messes before—after all, she’s an author and single mom who’s a pro at getting out bloodstains for rather unexpected reasons—but none quite like this. She and her nanny/partner-in-crime Vero accidentally destroyed a luxury car that they “borrowed” in the process of saving Finlay’s ex-husband. The Russian mob handled her debt, but that means Finlay now owes them.
Still running the show from behind bars, mob boss Feliks has a task for Finlay: find a contract killer before the cops do. Problem is, the killer might be an officer. Luckily, hot cop Nick has started up a citizen’s police academy, so Finlay has the perfect cover-up to sleuth out the real criminal as she does some “research” for her new novel. Nick is more than happy to get close to Finlay, but he’s also getting dangerously close to the truth.
As Finlay and Vero dodge potential spies and juggle the daily trials of parenting, they can only hope they find the crooked cop before Feliks catches up with them—not to mention revealing Vero’s mysterious past, Nick’s growing interest in Finlay, and the threat of her looming book deadline. My Initial Thoughts
I really like how each book picks up pretty close to where the previous book left off. In book two Finlay and Steven had a bit of a reckoning, where Steven finally realized that Finlay was right and was grateful to her for saving his life. In this book he’s thrilled when Finlay announces that she needs him to watch the kids for a week while she and Vero attend the citizen’s policy academy.
It’s for her book, she says. It’s a great way to do hands-on research for her what comes next in her series. But their real reason for going to is try to figure out who the real contract killer is for Feliks. It just might be a crooked cop.
I thought this was a really fun idea for a book. There were so many funny scenes during the different activities and forensic classes that the attendees participated in.
Finlay and Nick
In this book, Finlay and Nick get a lot closer to each other. Their scenes together are a lot of fun, but Finlay still isn’t sure how to take the next step forward. As much as I liked Julian in the first book (and his small scene in the second book), I’m starting to think that Nick might be end game. He’s so good with Finlay’s family and her kids love him. And what’s not to love about that?
I loved their little dinner date that they had at the academy. It was very sweet. Their relationship may be developing slowly, but that just means that it’s real.
Georgia
We also get a lot of great Georgia scenes in this book. Since she’s a police officer, she also makes a lot of appearances at the policy academy. And she just might have a love interest of her own? You’ll have to wait and see.
There’s a lot of Character Development in this Book
We get to know a lot of current characters better, as well as meet some new characters. Finlay is very suspicious of Joey and does a lot of deep diving in this book. Meanwhile we also meet Nick’s old partner as well as some of the other people who work for the police department. It’s a little stressful because Finlay and Vero have a lot to hide. And being around this many cops means that there’s a lot that could go wrong.
This Book Had Just the Right Amount of Humor
As I mentioned earlier in my review, I love the humor of the Finlay Donovan series. Elle Cosimano is such a gifted writer and I don’t know how she comes up with some of these ideas.
There’s so much sneaking around. Like Finlay sneaking around the offices. Or Cam sneaking around the premises. Or Javi sneaking in through Vero and Finlay’s bedroom window. So much sneaking!
In Conclusion
There was firearm training. Obstacle courses. Movie nights. Run ins with the mob. This book really had it all.
I’m the kind of person who prefers at least nine hours of sleep, so I have no idea how these ladies made it through the week. I would have been exhausted if I was them.
I hope you enjoyed my Finlay Donovan Jumps the Gun book review! I’m really enjoying this series and if you haven’t checked it out yet, I think you will too. I checked out the next book from the library and am hoping to get to it soon!
