Home Alone Screening: A Nostalgic Night with Macaulay Culkin
A couple of months ago I was looking for Christmas activities that I might like to take part in, and I saw that my city was having a screening of Home Alone with a follow up Q&A with Macaulay Culkin, one of the most successful child actors. That sounded really fun! I immediately purchased tickets for my boyfriend and I and promptly forgot about it until last week. On Thursday evening we ate dinner quickly and then drove into the city of Reading for A Nostalgic Night with Macaulay Culkin.
It was a very chilly evening so we parked quickly and hurried to The Santander Performing Arts Center to check in, purchase some snacks, and then find our seats for the movie. Part one of the evening was the screening of Home Alone and part two was the audience Q&A.

What is Home Alone about?
If you aren’t familiar, Home Alone is a modern Christmas classic starring Macaulay Culkin. It’s the story of young Kevin Mccallister who is accidentally left at home when his family leaves for an extended Paris vacation. It’s not until his parents are midway through their flight until they release that their youngest son is at home all alone. They immediately try to find a way home once they arrive in Paris, but it’s Christmas Eve and everyone is trying to get to where they need to be for Christmas.
Meanwhile, Kevin is left to fend for himself in Chicago. At first he has fun, eating ice cream for dinner and decorating the house for Christmas. But when burglars target his house to break in and steal his families belongings, Kevin knows that it’s up to him to protect his family home.
He sets a series of elaborate traps to teach the burglars a lesson. And along the way, Kevin learns to appreciate his family and the true meaning of Christmas.
The Concept
There’s something very fun about watching a classic movie with a crowd. When the lights dimmed and the movie started, everyone started clapping when Kevin Mcallister showed up on the screen.
The Venue
I’ll be honest, I don’t think my venue was the best for this type of event. Our seats were in the balcony and you had to sit up incredibly straight in order to see the movie screen. They also had the sound up way too loud so there were certain times when the music or the sound effects were just way too jarring. I still had a good time though. It’s just hard to show a movie in a group setting when you’re not actually in a movie theater.
The Moderated Q&A Session
At the end of the movie, the lights turned on and Macaulay Culkin and a moderator came out for the moderated q&a session. Both gentleman were very comfortable on stage and it was really fun to see how much this movie means to Macaulay. Of course we all cheered when he came out on stage and he genuinely seemed so flattered that we’re all such fans of this beloved franchise.
The moderator asked about 10-12 questions that audience members submitted online. It was really interesting to hear Macaulay talk about his experience working with John Hughes. He mentioned a bunch of his earlier projects like Richie Rich, The Good Son, and Uncle Buck. Most of the questions were about Home Alone though.
It really seemed like he had so much fun filming Home Alone. He talked about his experiences with the other actors, how he had a stunt double for all of his stunts, as well as other experiences on set. It really must have been an unforgettable experience for him because he remembers so much about it even though he was only 9.
The Audience
I’ve had this problem at The Santander Performing Arts Center before, but some people in the audience just don’t know how to behave. There were so many people that arrived late and were finding seats well into the movie. And the people behind me were constantly getting up and leaving and then coming back again, especially during the Q&A session. It’s a little frustrating when you pay so much for a ticket and then the people around you just don’t have any theater etiquette.
Was I Happy I Went?
Yes, I definitely was. I bought tickets because I wanted to have a fun Christmas show to see in December and this show fit the bill. Iconic Home Alone actor Macaulay Culkin was such a pleasure to listen to. He knows that this film makes people of all ages happy, and he even had a fun trivia game for children at the end where he asked kids from the audience questions.
I love movie and tv show nostalgia and so this show was really fun for me. It was a great way to get into the holiday season and everyone else in the audience was having fun as well!
