The Soulmate Book Review: Thriller by Sally Hepworth

I’ve become a big fan of Sally Hepworth’s thriller novels, so I’m excited to share my The Soulmate book review today. The New York Times calls it one of the best thrillers of the year, and I would have to say I agree! The whole book keeps you guessing, as you learn more about the picturesque cliff-side home that belongs to Pippa and Gage Gerard.

This book was fascinating on so many different levels. So make sure you keep reading for my full book review. I haven’t caught up on all of Sally Hepworth’s books yet but when I do, I think The Soulmate will still be one of my favorites.

What is The Soulmate by Sally Hepworth About?

Prepare yourself for a thrilling, addictive novel about marriage, betrayal, and the secrets that push us to the edge in this next book from the bestselling author of The Good Sister and The Younger Wife.

Picture a lovely cottage on a cliff, with sloping lawns, walking paths, and beautiful flowers. It’s Gabe and Pippa Gerard’s dream home in a sleepy coastal town. But their perfect house hides something sinister. The tall cliffs have become a popular spot for people to end their lives. Over the past several months, Gabe comes to their rescue, literally talking them off the ledge.

Until one day, he doesn’t. When Pippa discovers Gabe knew the victim, the questions spiral. . . .Did the victim jump? Was she pushed? And would Gabe, the love of Pippa’s life, her soulmate . . . lie? As the perfect façade of their marriage begins to crack, the deepest and darkest secrets begin to unravel. Because sometimes, the most convincing lies are the ones we tell ourselves. Who is author Sally Hepworth?

Sally Hepworth is an Australian author known for her gripping, character-driven novels, often blending family drama with psychological suspense. Her books, such as The Mother-in-Law and The Good Sister, explore complex family relationships and hidden secrets. Hepworth’s writing often delves into themes of motherhood, marriage, and friendship, resonating with readers for her relatable characters and unexpected twists. She has gained popularity worldwide, especially among fans of domestic thrillers.

My Initial Thoughts

I’ve read and enjoyed books by Sally Hepworth before, so when I first heard about The Soulmate it had me intrigued. I’m always partial to domestic thrillers and this story is filled with murder, mystery, and marital woes.

However, not everyone’s woes are out in the open. The characters in this story have a knack for keeping things to themselves (isn’t that always how it goes?) and that’s part of what keeps the story moving. Can they keep the perfect facade of their marriage going? And what really happened at the cliff’s edge?

About the Characters

Although the story focuses on Pippa’s family (Pippa, her husband Gabe, and their sweet young daughters) there are other characters as well.

The Soulmate focuses on two couples whose lives are intermingled. But as a reader you don’t really get the full story until the final chapter. First there’s Pippa and Gabe. They’re a young married couple who share two children and have just started their new lives in a beach cottage on the cliffs.

And then there’s Max Cameron and Amanda Cameron. They’re a middle aged couple who have worked hard for the lavish life that they live. And won’t let anything get in the way of that.

Like in all thrillers, these characters are wrapped up in a sordid web of secrets. I found them to be complicated and very memorable characters.

This Story is Dark (So Be Prepared)

A big part of this story is about how the Gerard family lives near a popular suicide spot. And it’s on the edge of a cliff. Gabe Gerard is a bit of a local hero, talking people down and leading them to safety. On the fateful night Gabe isn’t able to help and a woman falls, Pippa is concerned. The book features a lot of people with mental health issues which raises questions.

What I Liked About The Soulmate

I enjoyed the narrative structure of this story. I liked that the story was told in alternating voices because it really helped my to understand where Pippa and Amanda were coming from.

Throughout the story things unraveled slowly, which meant that I really didn’t want to stop reading and devoured this book in just a few days.

I enjoyed that while something felt off about the relationships in this story, I couldn’t quite put my finger on why. I remember that being the same way with another Sally Hepworth book I read called The Good Sister. The information is divulged little by little and as a reader you just have to hurry up and keep reading to find out.

I recommend this book if you too enjoy thrillers about ordinary couples doing, well… less than ordinary things. I felt the ending was satisfying and can’t wait until the release in 2023 when I can recommend this book to all of my reader friends.

Something I Wondered

Why did the Gerards even stay at their house? Lol. I would be way too freaked out to live on the top of a cliff, especially when they had such sinister things happening not that far from their house. But maybe there weren’t that many homes for sale in their small coastal town. I don’t know. I just feel like their property would probably be a hotbed for ghosts and I would not be okay with that if it were me.

In Conclusion

I hope you enjoyed my The Soulmate book review! If you enjoy a domestic thriller with lots of dark secrets, this books is definitely worth reading. Author Sally Hepworth never disappoints if you enjoy thrillers with good suspense and family drama.
