The Golden Couple Book Review | A Twisty Domestic Thriller

I’ve read quite a few thriller novels by Greer Hendricks & Sarah Pekkanen, so when The Golden Couple was a Book of the Month pick I knew I wanted to read it. But then it wound up sitting on my bookshelf for a couple of years. Oops!

I’m excited to be sharing my The Golden Couple book review today because it’s an interesting story with quite a few different mysteries going on. I was immediately sucked into the story because each of the characters seems to be keeping secrets and I knew the biggest secrets were going to be explosive to this psychological thriller.

I hope you enjoy my honest review. If you’re looking for more reading recommendations, you can read more of my book reviews here.

What is The Golden Couple  book about?

The Golden Couple tells the story of Marissa and Matthew Bishop, who seem like the couple who has it all. Wealthy Washington Suburbanites Marissa and Mathew Bishop are going through a hard time in their marriage though. Marissa cheats, and is desperate for her husband to forgive her. She decides to hire a therapist to work with them as a couple. Maybe they just need the help of a third party to save their marriage.

Enter Avery Chambers.

Avery is a maverick therapist with an unconventional style. Her methods are so controversial that she would up losing her therapist license a few months back. But although she may be considered a rogue therapist, she really does seems to have her clients best interests at heart. So when Marissa Bishop contacts her and explains that she needs her help with her marriage, she decides to take them on. as clients.

Avery is open with them from the start about her controversial methods, and both Marissa and Matthew agree to follow her plan. But as they begin attending their sessions and both of them begin confessing things to Avery separately, Avery realizes that there’s a lot more going on in their marriage than she initially thought. Not for the first time, she begins getting involved in her clients’ lives in ways that may or may not be appropriate.

What other books have Greer Hendricks & Sarah Pekkanen wrote together?

Greer and Sarah are a great writing duo of slow burn domestic thriller novels with plenty of plot twists and turns. I first listened to the audiobook of The Wife Between Us a few years ago and I’ve been obsessed with their books ever since. If you like The Golden Couple, make sure to check out all of the other domestic thrillers by this author duo.

If you enjoyed their writing style in The Golden Couple, you will definitely want to check out the rest of their books.

Who are the characters in The Golden Couple?

Marissa Bishop –  A mom, wife, and business owner. For reasons that are not quite clear at the beginning, she cheats on her husband. Just once.  Her guilt is a big part of the story but she also has a lot of secrets, which makes her an interesting character.

Matthew Bishop – He has a tough time with Marissa’s infidelity, but with Avery’s help and marriage counseling he may be able to forgive his wife.  His job keeps him busy but he also really enjoys spending tie with his wife and his son. He’s not secretive per se, but he is a little bit mysterious.

Avery Chambers – Marissa and Matthew’s unconventional therapist. The story is partly told from her perspective. We learn about her backstory and her work with her previous clients. Avery’s character gives off a strange vibe, as if she is hiding something. And yet I found her character very wholesome at the same time. Do with that what you will.

Other side characters:

Polly is Marissa’s assistant. She seems like an okay girl, but she rubs Marissa the wrong way.

Skip – Marissa and Matthew’s friend from childhood.

Natalie – Matthew’s former girlfriend who turns up in their lives from time to time.

The thing that I really like about this book is that all of the characters are flawed, but also likable. I had it in a domestic suspense when the author is too heavy handed with their character descriptions and makes it super obvious who they don’t want you to like. You don’t get that in this book. Everyone is given a fair description which makes it a good suspense novel because you have no idea who to suspect.

Who is Acelia in The Golden Couple?

Acelia plays a big part in this story because they are a part of Avery’s controversial past. After she uses information from a patient to cause major issues in their business, Acelia tracks Avery down and uses everything intimidation tactic in the book in order to get what they want from her. It’s a side plot that helps to explain why Avery is the way she is.

How long is The Golden Couple audiobook?

If you prefer to listen to audiobooks rather than read physical books, you’re in luck! The Golden Couple is available in audiobook format. i would first suggest looking for it on the libby app, but it is also available to purchase through audible.

The length of the audible version of The Golden Couple is 11 hours and 3 minutes long.

Would you recommend The Golden Couple?

I would. I was immediately sucked in from the beginning. Although Avery uses unusual methods with her clients, her therapy actually makes a lot of sense. It was confusing to me because I had this notion that I wasn’t going to like her and yet I did. I love story that keeps you guessing with red herrings, and also makes you really feel for the characters. I had enjoyed Greer and Sarah’s previous books and really wound up enjoying this one as well! The Golden Couple is a really good read. I think that if you enjoy twisty thrillers you will really enjoy this one as well.
