Farrah Rochon’s The Boyfriend Project Book Review

I’m so excited to share my The Boyfriend Project book review with you today. It’s a story that very pleasantly surprised me.

I was browsing online for new books to read when The Boyfriend Project caught my eye. I was curious about the title so I clicked through to goodreads to read the description. What is a boyfriend project, I asked myself? Is this one of those  stories where the main character is looking for love and tries to change herself to get a man?

Nope! That is the exact opposite of what The Boyfriend Project by Farrah Rochon is about. The description immediately hooked me and I knew that this was a book I wanted to read and review on my blog. This book is about so much more than dating. It’s about accepting and loving yourself, and going for your goals. I found Samiah so inspiring and thought she was an amazing lead for this rom com.

What is The Boyfriend Project About?

A smart and delightful romantic comedy featuring fabulous female friendships and “a great love story.” –Jasmine Guillory, bestselling author of Party of Two

Samiah Brooks never thought she would be “that” girl. But a live tweet of a horrific date just revealed the painful truth: she’s been catfished by a three-timing jerk of a boyfriend. Suddenly Samiah — along with his two other “girlfriends,” London and Taylor — have gone viral online. Now the three new besties are making a pact to spend the next six months investing in themselves. No men and no dating. For once Samiah is putting herself first, and that includes finally developing the app she’s always dreamed of creating. Which is the exact moment she meets the deliciously sexy Daniel Collins at work. What are the chances? But is Daniel really boyfriend material or is he maybe just a little too good to be true? (from Amazon.com)

My Initial Thoughts

As I mentioned earlier, I had some assumptions about this book from the title that wound up being untrue. I thought the main premise was going to be about finding a boyfriend. I can’t say I would blame Samiah if that were the case. Honey-eyed Daniel Collins is quite the charmer. But NO! Let me explain.

The Boyfriend Project is about Samiah, London, and Taylor going after what they want and following their dreams so that eventually they will want to focus on their dating lives and relationship status. Can you blame them? After they were tricked by Craig the three-timer (although he may have actually been dating more than 3 women) none of them wants to focus on guys.

And I think that was such a unique plot point in this story. I loved this story because it showed a smart and confident black women who knew what she was worth, and wasn’t going to settle. Samiah was such a lovely character to read about. Some of my favorite moments were when she was advocating for herself and telling of Keleigh at work. It’s important for women to support women, especially in professional settings, so I thought that was a really important part of the story.

Samiah and Daniel

I loved the slow development of their relationship. They started out as coworkers and then transitioned to friends. It was so cute how they were so obviously attracted to each other and yet didn’t want to get involved for fear of screwing up the work relationship. I don’t even know how to describe their interactions besides saying that they are really cute.

Samiah is also hesitant to get involved with Daniel after the whole fiasco with Craig. That kind of situation can really shake your confidence. Plus she has her work for The Boyfriend Project to do, which includes getting a friendship app running and into the app store. It’s a project that she’s been working on for years and with London and Taylor helping her stay accountable, she’s so close to achieving her goal.

Woman Power!!!

Part of what makes this story so cool is that it is female focused, and all of the main characters are career women. Samiah is a woman in tech, working incredibly hard to achieve the life she’s always wanted. London is an incredibly busy doctor and Taylor is working to get her health and fitness business off the ground.

I loved all of these characters and their new friendship. I really look forward to the rest of this series because I’m sure that the upcoming books will focus on the other women in Samiah’s friend group.

A great part of this story was when Samiah brought one of her brother in law’s students (he’s a teacher) to work one day so that she could show her the Trendsetters office. Exposing kids to different careers and showing them different perspectives is such an important part of growing and developing. I already loved Samiah but I thought that was a very cool scene in this story.

In Conclusion

I hope you enjoyed my The Boyfriend Project book review. If you’re looking for an adorable romance about two people who just can’t fight the undeniable attraction, then The Boyfriend Project by Farrah Rochon is the book for you. It made me really happy and I was rooting for Samiah and Daniel the whole time. I haven’t read many books about women in tech and it was really cool to get a glimpse into that world.
