Is Book of the Month Worth It?
Welcome back to the blog, reader friends! Today we’re going to be discussing one of my favorite services that I am subscribed to: Book of the Month. Because I think that a lot of people who see advertisements for BOTM on youtube and on instagram have the same question. Is Book of the Month worth it?
My goal for today’s blog post is to share some information on the service as well as answer some questions that people often have. I’ll also be sharing my own experience because I’ve been a member for a couple of years now and definitely have some thoughts!
So let’s get started! Keep reading below for my full Book of the Month review.
What is Book of the Month?
Book of the Month is a subscription service for readers. Each month subscribers pay a fee for a credit that they can then use toward a hardcover book or an audiobook for that month. Book of the Month prides themselves in curating a small selection of books each month that features early releases, debut authors, and a variety of topics and genres.
How Much Does Book of the Month Cost Per Month?
I currently pay $16.95 for my Book of the Month credit each month. I believe everyone pays the same price.
If you are consider signing up, you should definitely check out the website because sometimes in the
What is the Book of the Month?
That’s the cool thing about BOTM. There is no THE book of the month. Each month they curate a small list of books. This list usually consist of early releases or books that are coming out soon. They feature a variety of genres so you are sure to find something that piques your interest in the list.
Every month you can choose 1 book from the list as your “Book of the Month” selection. You can pick hardcover copy that will be mailed to you, or they also have an audiobook option for all of you that love to read, but also love to multi task!
Do you have to return Book of the Month books?
No. When you receive a Book of The Month book in the mail, it is yours to keep. If I think it is a book I won’t read again, I usually donate mine to a Little Free Library after I’ve read it. That way others can enjoy these great books too!
Can I skip Book of the Month?
Yes! BOTM allows you to “Pause” your account for 1 month or more at a time. That way if you are busy catching up on books that you haven’t read yet, you can put your account on pause so that you aren’t purchasing any new books in the meantime.
What if I Don’t Like Any of the Book of the Month Selections?
This happens sometimes! And it’s not a problem. Book of the Month allows you to “Skip” for the month. When you skip a month, that means your credit sits in your account and you can use it for another book at another time. This can come in handy because you many not like any of the choices this month, but you may like ALL of the choices next month.
Another option is that you can select an older book that has been popular on the site! I did this one time and I wound up with Home Before Dark by Riley Sager, which I really enjoyed!
Is Book of the Month a good gift?
It can be a great gift! The great thing about gift cards is that it allows the recipient of the gift to buy something that they really enjoy. In this case, they get to pick out a book that they really enjoy. That takes so much pressure off of you because then you don’t have to stress about trying to figure out what your friend or family member would want to read.
I may buy a gift card for my mom for Christmas next year, because I know that some of these stories would be right up her alley.
Is the Website Easy to Use?
I would say so. The website is user friendly, as it the app that you can download on your phone or tablet. I like to keep the app on my phone because I get notifications telling me when my book has shipped and when it has been delivered. It helps me stay organized!
What are Some of the Pros of Book of the Month?
- I love that BOTM has introduced me to new authors who I may not have heard about otherwise.
- The books are so pretty and look great on my shelf (lol)
- Book mail makes me happy! I love when I get the notification on my phone saying that my book is out for delivery.
- It’s always fun when the book you choose is actually an early release, and so you get to read it before everyone else.
And the Cons?
- All physical copies of books come in hardcover. This can take up a lot of room on our bookshelves and may create a problem if you don’t have much room for storage.
- The boxes are cardboard and I’ve had a couple of my books get wet because the mail carriers leave the box out in the rain instead of sticking it inside my door. I wish BOTM used waterproof packaging.
Is Book of the Month Worth It?
Yes, in my opinion Book of the Month is worth it. At $16.99 a month it is definitely a luxury, but the happiness these books bring me is definitely worth it.
In Conclusion
I hope you enjoyed this post about Book of the Month! Overall I really enjoy the program which is why I have been a member for over two years. I’ve been introduced to many new authors and genres that I may not have checked out otherwise.
