Family Christmas Journal: Holiday Creative Writing Prompts
My favorite thing about journaling is that when you write something down on the page, you’re documenting it forever.
That’s why today’s blog post is going to be discussing holiday creative writing prompts for families. The holidays can be such a stressful time of year. We’re always running around organizing food and family get-togethers and Christmas gifts.
Sometimes we forget to sit back and take time to enjoy it!
Keep reading to learn about why it’s important to keep a holiday journal for your family, as well as some different writing prompts to help you document the holiday season this year! And if you enjoyed this post, make sure you check out the rest of my journaling posts.
What is a Family Christmas Journal?
A family Christmas journal is something my own mother started for our family when I was a kid. She has this clothbound journal with tons of pages in it. The fabric is this cute holly pattern that’s just perfect for the holidays.
When I was just a small child, she began keeping a journal every Christmas. She would write down things like:
- What did the family do for Christmas?
- What foods did we eat?
- Where did we celebrate the holidays? And with who?
- What gifts did the kids receive?
They were just tidbits here and there, but looking back on these pages is really fun! Now that I’m an adult, I really don’t remember too much about my childhood, so it’s fun to read my mom’s thoughts on how much I loved my Barney doll (lol) or how much my brother loved his new art desk.
These are details that I would never remember to tell my future kids. But someday they can look back on the family Christmas journal and read all about how I celebrated Christmas when I was growing up.
And it will also be interesting for them to look back on traditions that my parents started, that got passed on to them!
What are the benefits of keeping a Christmas Journal?
Following these holiday creative writing prompts can help you to be present, and reflect on the current season! It can get really busy at Christmas time and it often feels like the holidays go by way too quickly, so it’s important to savor every moment.
It can be a bonding moment for you and your family. Invite your family members to answer these writing prompts with you. Ask others what their favorite memories and traditions are. Ask others to share their favorite Christmas photo that they captured on their phone and paste it in the journal! It can be a great way for the family to spend time during the winter holidays, and while the kids are on winter break.
By writing down your Christmas memories in a journal, you can share your memories with future generations. Of course we all pass down stories verbally, but after time we forget certain and feelings and details. By writing it all down, you’re securing your memories for the future.
What Kind of Notebook Should I Use for Holiday Creative Writing Prompts?
You can use whichever notebook is your favorite! Something that can be fun is using a notebook that has a holiday theme, but any notebook that is good for journal entries will work!
I am a fan of this composition book (and this one too!) but if you look on Amazon, they have some really cute seasonal notebooks, like this one.
