The 5 Best Books I Read in 2024
This past year has been a great year for me in terms of books. I rediscovered my love for audiobooks and have managed to catch up on a lot of reading backlog for Netgalley. I read a lot of books I loved, as well as a few that I didn’t really care for. In today’s blog post, I’m going to look over everything that I read this year and discuss the 5 best books I read in 2024.
It’s not going to be easy to narrow down my list. How can I possibly pick the 5 best books I read in 2024? Well, it might take a while but I’ll figure it out. Keep reading for my list.
The 5 Best Books I Read in 2024
My Year of Rest and Relaxation by Ottessa Mosfegh
This is the first book that I read in 2024. I was in the mood for something different and I had some amazon credits, so I purchased the ebook to read on my kindle.
I was interested in the book because of the plot. I didn’t understand why the main character would want to sleep for a year. The book seemed farfetched but in a way that was intriguing.
I don’t know how to explain it, but this book was exactly what I was looking for. The writing style just really worked for me and although the plot was farfetched, it also just made sense. I felt a lot of distress for the main character because she clearly had a lot of issues but I was also very entertained by this story, highly anticipating what would happen next.
Girl Abroad by Elle Kennedy
This was my first time reading an Elle Kennedy book and I really enjoyed it. I could tell after this book that I was going to love the rest of her works as well.
It’s a tale about a young woman who travels to England to study abroad for the year. Abbey is used to living a certain way. Her Dad raised her alone and he’s vert protective of her. So when she accidentally moves in with a house full of young men, she has to keep it a secret. All while trying to adjust to a new country as well as her new classes.
Abbey takes a liking to two different guys and has fun getting to know them during her year abroad. I thought this book was really fun and I loved how liberated and free Abbey was once she was out from beneath her father’s thumb. There’s also a cool side plot about a mysterious painting that Abbey purchased at an estate sale.
Girl Gone Viral by Alisha Rai
Girl Gone Viral is romance novel came out a couple of years ago but I just wound up getting to it this year. And I’m glad I did because it was so cute.
You have to suspend your disbelief a little bit, but it’s about a young widow who who goes into hiding after accidentally going viral (all for talking to a guy in a coffee shop). Her bodyguard is very protective of her and suggests that they go to stay at his family’s farm property to take a breather and relax a little bit.
The romance between the two is so sweet. And I’m trying to think of a better word to describe it. Tender, maybe? Jai is so patient with Katrina and her anxiety. Meanwhile, she is so thoughtful and kind. And I don’t know why but I found the fact that she makes sourdough and mentioned her sourdough starter frequently really comforting.
The side characters were fun too! This is the second book in the Modern Love series so I hope to check out books 1 and 3 eventually.
The Last One by Will Dean
My friend Jenn recommended this book to me and it was fantastic. It’s about a young woman who boards an ocean liner with her boyfriend to head to America. At the first dinner, they drink a lot of wine and wind up going to bed late. When Caz wakes up, her partner isn’t there.
No big deal. She gets out of bed to find him, but when she opens the door there’s no one there. Anywhere. The entire ship is empty. No passengers. No crew. She has to jump into action mode quickly to figure out what in the world is going on.
That’s all I’m going to say about that one. This is a truly wild book and it tricked me so many times. Every time I thought I had it figured out I didn’t. It’s also pretty long so if you like a good long thriller, definitely check this one out.
I’m hoping to check out more of Will Dean’s work soon!
Good Girl Complex by Elle Kennedy
My second Elle Kennedy book is Good Girl Complex, which I absolutely loved. This is another college romance, but it takes place in a small beach town. Mackenzie is just starting college and looking to meet new people and hopefuly graduate unscathed. Cooper is a local who works hard and likes to have a good time.
When the two meet, Mack is convinced that she and Cooper can be just friends. But Cooper has a secret. He’s made a bet with his friends to steal her away from her awful boyfriend.
I just found the two of them so cute together. And of course I loved that they saved a dog together! Dogs really make the best side characters in a romance novel, in my honest opinion.
In Conclusion
So there you have it! I’m writing this blog post at the beginning of December, so I’m not quite done with my annual reading. But these are the best books that I’ve read so far. If you have any recommendations, make sure you contact me or leave a comment to share your thoughts.
