It’s Halloween season in Holiday Junction, and the village is pulling out all the stops for its legendary Halloweenie Festival. With a week full of ghost walks, hayrides, pumpkin carving, carnival games, and a dazzling costume party, it’s the perfect spooky celebration.
Violet Rhinehammer has the ideal assignment for the Junction Journal—attending all the hauntingly festive events and capturing the magic of the season. But the fun takes a sinister turn when Violet reluctantly joins a ghost walk, only to discover that the body falling out of a fake casket is horrifyingly real.
When someone Violet cares for becomes Chief Strickland’s prime suspect, she dons a sleuthing costume of her own to unmask the real monster lurking in Holiday Junction. Can Violet solve the case before the Halloweenie Festival becomes a frightful fiasco?
Full of lovable, quirky characters and small-town charm, Halloween Homicide is a must-read for fans of cozy crime, including Ellie Alexander, Lauren Elliott, and M.C. Beaton. (from Amazon.com)
My Initial Thoughts
For the first third of this book, I listened to the audiobook. And then I finished reading it on my kindle. I really enjoyed the narrator’s southern accent. It really made Violet and the small town of Holiday Junction seem even more charming!
Violet is a reporter for the Junction Journal, so it’s up to her to cover Holiday Junction’s Halloweenie Festival. The operators of the hay ride are very excited for Violet to experience their ghost walk of haunting tales and write about it in the paper. So they invite her to take an early tour and experience it for herself.
Violet doesn’t love scare things, but she agrees to go on an early tour in the middle of the day. What’s the worst that could happen in broad daylight?
But that’s where she’s wrong, and that’s where this murder mystery story begins. I loved all of the different characters around Halloween Junction. Violet’s mama Millie Kay really made me laugh. She added a lot of humor and heart to the story.
A Little Bit About A Halloween Homicide
A Halloween Homicide is book 3 of the Holiday Cozy Mystery series by Tonya Kappes. I knew that this book was part of a series but I didn’t realize that there were 13 books in total!
Because I joined in at book 3, I was a little confused about some of the characters. But that is completely my fault because I should have read the series in order. But that’s okay. I was able to catch up easily enough. I really enjoyed this delightful tale though, and plan to check out the rest of the series in the upcoming months.
What I Liked About A Halloween Homicide
I really enjoyed Violet, the main character in this story. She’s very sensible and takes her job at the Junction Journal very seriously. Since this is the first book in the series I’ve read, I’m not completely familiar with her backstory. But I like how she’s adjusting to her new hometown little by little. She’s really taking things in stride.
I also really enjoyed how creative the set up is. Holiday Junction is a small town that takes their holiday festivities very seriously. It’s revealed early on that Violet is the town’s “Merry Maker” for the year, which means that she’s in charge of some of the festivities. But it’s a secret job and so she can’t let anyone know about her involvement.
I liked how this book was just filled with Halloween spirit. Honestly, the Halloweenie Festival sounds really fun weeklong celebration. It seems like something I’d like to attend if it was real! There are so many fun festive activities to take part in.
In Conclusion
Thank you so much for checking out today’s book review of A Halloween Homicide by Tonya Kappes. It’s a hauntingly great time if you’re looking for a Halloween cozy mystery to read right now. The town of Holiday Junction is so cute and the characters made me laugh. It was my first time reading a book by Tonya Kappes and I really enjoyed it.
This festive Halloween tale was very enjoyable and I plan to check out the rest of the books in the series. I also want to check out Tonya’s other series, the Campers and Criminals cozy mystery series.
Per usual, there’s so much to read and so little time! Lol.
